1. Community gathering location if, or when, U.S. invades Iraq

Events commitee wants to get word out about our contingency plan. If the US invades Iraq before 6:00 p.m. Phoenix time, we will meet that day at 6:00 p.m at the corner of Mill and University Avenue. If the invasion commences after 6:00 p.m Phoenix time, we will meet at 6:00 p.m. the next day at the corner of Mill and University Avenue. All peacekeepers are requested to show up at this event. We will prominently announce this on our web page. We want to get the word out to the community.

2. September 11 event

Still working out plans. One idea is to to table and hand out fiers at the largest of the 9/11 events. Another idea is to participate in the Rotary Club 9/8 peace march. More details of the march are needed. A concern was that there might be a strong negative response if we are too critical of U.S. foreign policy on that date. On the other hand there was discussion that we should express concerns not only with the victims of 9/11 violent attacks against civilains, but also with the victims of American sponsored or cosponsored violent attacks on civilians in the Phillipines, Columbia, etc. Sue requested that we do a candle light vigil, at least for ourselves.

It is requested that interested participants come to the events section of Sunday's general Assembly meeting with: (1) ideas for a 9/11 flier that sensitively addresses the 9/11 attack and raises awareness of current dangers; and (2) specifics regarding 9/11 commemorative events in our community so we can decide which one we want to be involved with. 3. September 23 March against U.S. Invasion of Iraq (and kick off of regular AAPJ vigil/billboard lines)

Still working out plans. March will begin at Mill and University at 5:00 p.m. Possible march routes were discussed, including marching over the bridge. Victor will check out the need for a permit at certain rallying location. While we have some anti-sanctions signs available, we need anti-invasion signs. Events will request $100 from organizing commitee. It is requested that indviduals come up with anti-invasion slogans for signs to give to Tom and Sherry by September 8. A meeting will be held to make the signs. Stan and Mitch will meet and come up with a recommendation regarding regular vigil/billboard lines.

4. Septmber 21-22 Direct Action training

Sherry stated that the goal is to train a group of individuals from across the state who have, or are considering, a long term committment to non-violent direct action, or to support those who do The meetins will start on Friday, September 20, between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. There will be a community pot luck Saturday, September 21.

An initial discussion was held about what, if any, is AAPJ's relationship to any potential non-violent direct action. One view expressed was that civil disobedience is ultimately an individual decision.

5. Move On Senatorial Visits

There is a nationwide movement to visit U.S. Senators on August 28 and ask the Senators hard questions about going to war against Iraq and make the best case to the Senators against invasion. The visit to Senator Kyle will take place in Tucson. The visit to Senator McCain hopefully will take place in Phoenix. The goal is to have our best spokesperons meet with the Senators with supporters outside.

6. Tempe Butte anti-war sign

Events has been discussing placing an anti-war sign on the Tempe Buttes. In the past Tempe City has said that private groups can put up signs on Tempe Butte, and it was not limited to Christmas-type signs or displays (as in the past). However, now that the Tempe Buttes has received new environmental protection, Victor will ask to see if we can still put up a sign. If the answer is yes, a group is needed to spearhead the designing and building of the sign.

7. October 7 Commencment of US Bombing in Afghanistan

Events would like to ask the Education Comittee to consider showing the POV documentary "Afghanstan Year 1380," a cassette which Sue will be getting. The idea was to show t in one of the ASU auditoriums on October 7. The documentary shows post September 11 Afghanistan from the perspective of two medical workers.

8. Friday, November 22,

Victor is proposing AAPJ participate with a no-violence day, urging Tempe residtents not to go to violent movies, or anything that promotes violence.
